Doe, A Deer

On August 13, 1942, Walt Disney released his fifth full length picture, Bambi. Bambi was one of those movies I could recite from memory; I watched it that much. I definitely cried with every viewing. (Come on. You know you did, too.) Here are a few fun facts I bet you didn't know about Bambi and deer:

• Cervine means deerlike. It comes from the Latin word cervinus for deer.
• Mississippi is home to an estimated 1.75 million deer. Texas is the only state with a larger deer herd.
• Austrian Jew Felix Salten published his book Bambi: A Life in the Woods in 1928. Walt Disney made changes, so if you love the movie, you should definitely try the book.
• The Nazis perceived the book as an allegory for their treatment of the Jews; They banned and burned it in 1936.
